United Way of PEI and PEI Burger Love announce Give Back Burger Fund Allocation

United Way of PEI and PEI Burger Love announce Give Back Burger Fund Allocation (Charlottetown, P.E.I) – A number of Island Food Security Grants will be available from the United Way of Prince Edward Island thanks to the amazing success of the 2017 PEI Burger Love campaign and the Island-wide restaurants that supported the Give Back Burger promotion. The Give Back Burger initiative saw 36 of the 2017 PEI Burger Love participating restaurants donate $1 for each burger sold in April to the United Way of PEI raising more than $60K to fund future programs that increase access to local and affordable food for Islanders.

After consulting a variety of stakeholders across the Island it was determined that 95% of the Give Back Burger donations would be distributed through a number of Island Food Security Grants. Grants to a maximum of $5,000 each will be made available to charities across PEI to support individuals and families living without access to abundant and affordable food today. A call for grant applications will be issued in August, 2017. The remaining 5% will be shared between two community specific programs Let’s Talk Food and PEI Fest’s – Youth Social Entrepreneurship Conference. With support from the United Way and the City of Charlottetown, funds allocated to the Let’s Talk Food initiative will be directed to developing Island-wide food security strategies facilitated by the PEI Food Security Network. Funds allocated to the PEIFest’s – Youth Social Entrepreneur Conference encouraged youth to develop innovative ways of addressing food security through entrepreneurship.

The three initiatives are intended to address both the immediate and long-term requirements for food security.  “The outcome of our discussions has been very clear. People of PEI need access to affordable food, the ability to prepare and consume nutritious food and less reliance on traditional food supports,” said United Way of PEI CEO Andrea MacDonald.  “We want to offer people the opportunity to foster change with a measurable, more coordinated, sustainable food system by funding programs supporting food security.”

“We are thrilled to know that the funds raised through the Give Back Burgers will create a positive impact for many Islanders in our community,” said Melody Dover, Fresh Media President and Creative Director. “We are proud to have partnered with the United Way of PEI and look forward to seeing what ideas come forth for the Island Food Security Grant Programs. It really warms our heart to know that funds raised with PEI Burger Love will help so many in our province.”

All donations to the United Way stay on Prince Edward Island and every dollar raised through the Give Back Burger will be used to increase access to local and affordable food for Islanders now and in the future.

"The United Way was kind enough to help the Native Council of PEI create my position, there's kind of been a lapse between the younger generation and the elders in the community, so the programming is to enrich everyone's life and to understand their cultural piece and past tradition."
